UMass Lowell's Assistive Technology Design Fair (ATDF) is a unique design event that allows high school students to tackle real-world engineering design problems aimed at helping people with disabilities or special needs. Students must identify an actual "client" in their community who has a need that can be solved by designing or adapting some assistive device. Each design team has to brainstorm and analyze possible solutions, build and test prototypes and make a presentation outlining their design work and justifying their final solution. Student teams showcase their design problems and prototypes at our Design Fair held each May, and many prototypes built by students are actually presented to clients.
